First: The Root (or Base) Chakra:

Color: Red

Element: Earth

Sense: Smell

Symbol: 4-petaled lotus

Body Parts: Spine, bones, teeth, nails, anus, colon, prostate gland.

Glands: Suprarenal glans which produce adrenaline and noradrenaline which enables the body to various demands and regulates body temperature.

Key Principle: Physical will of being, courage, security, safety, grounding, and boundaries.

Purpose: Connects us to the physical world, gives power to achieve and is the source of life force.

Harmonious Functioning: Life energy is strong.  One’s life is characterized by satisfaction, stability and inner strength. Goals are easily acheived. You feel grounded and trust yourself.

Disharmonious Functioning: Thoughts and actions mostly revolve around material possessions and security, or sensual indulgences and thrills, such as food, alcohol, drugs, sex etc. The inability to let go and maintain possession often manifest as constipation and weight gain. Violent enforcement of will. Rage, anger, violence are defense mechanisms for lack of primordial trust.

Insufficient Functioning: If root chakra is blocked or closed, phyical constitution becomes weak and there is a lack of physical and emotional stamina. Worry and uncertainty rule life. Sense of  losing one’s footing and feeling ungrounded  -  “not all there.” Difficulty in meeting the demands of daily life. Lack of stability and the power to achieve.

Second: The Sacral Chakra:

Body Parts: Pelvis, reproductive organs, kidneys, bladder.

Glands: Ovaries, prostate, testicles.

Key Principle: Creativity, desire, emotion, sexuality, and intuition.

Purpose: Center for primordial emotions, sexual energies and creativity. This is where you learn how to give and receive pleasure.

Harmonious Functioning: Natural flow of life and feelings, with an openess towards others especially towards the opposite sex. Sexual union in a loving way is an opportunity to participate in the dance of creation. Creative life forces stream through your body, soul and mind.

Disharmonious Functioning: Often originates during puberty when parents are not capable of handling the uncertainties of awakening.  sexual energies.  Also where the has been a lack of tenderness and bodily contact during  early infancy.  As a consequence, the uninhibited expression of the creative potential of sexuality is lost and can only be manifested in inappropriate ways such as sexual fantasies or the eruption of supressed sexual desires. May also result as using sex as a drug. Uncertain and tense with the opposite sex. Sensuality is coarse. Self satisfaction is forced.

Insufficient Functioning: Can be traced back to childhood and infancy where parents held back their own sensuality and sexuality and the child experienced a lack of sensual stimulation of touch, affection and tenderness. As a consequence sensual feelings are supressed. This can lead to a lack of self-esteem, emotional paralysis and frigidity.

Third: The Solar Plexus Chakra :

Color: Yellow to Golden

Element: Fire

Sense: Sight

Symbol: 10-petalled lotus

Body Parts: Lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gall bladder, autonomic nervous system.

Glands: Pacreas (liver)

Key Principle: Located 2 finger widths above the navel. Center of personal power, ambition, intellect, astral force, desire, and emotions based on intellect and touch. That which shapes our being.

Purpose: Represents our power center. Affects relationships with others, likes and dislikes, and the ability to enter into long-term relationships. Usually repressents the foundation of one’s personality and social indentity. Task consist of purifying the wishes and desires of lower chakras to allow the spiritual richness of the higher chakras to manifest them in the material world as a means of achieveing the greatest possible fulfillment on all levels of being. The accpetance and integration of feelings, wishes and experiences assist the thrid chakra to relax and open up, thus increasing inner light and illuminating one’s situation in life. When open you feel enlightened and full of joy. When blocked you feel gloomy and unbalanced. Simultaneously we project this same sensations out into the world around us. Through the solar plexus chakra we are able to percieve the “vibes” of others.

Harmonious Functioning: Creates a feeling of peace, harmony and acceptence of  self and others.

Disharmonious Functioning: Makes you want to manipulate everything in accordance with your wishes. You want to control your inner and outer reality. Driven by inner restlessness and discontent. Probably experienced lack of acceptence during childhood and as a result unable to develope a sense of self worth, seeking what you cannot find within in the material world. Creates an enormous urge to be active in order to mask nagging feelings of inadequacy. Emotions are stopped-up and when they break through the walls of control like a flood, are not channeled correctly. You get upset easily and the agitation is an expression of the anger that has been supressed for a long time.

Insufficient Functioning: Makes you feel dejected and discouraged. You see obstacles that prevent you from fulfilling your desires. Free unfolding of your personality was probably thwarted as a child. Fear of losing the approval of parents, teachers etc cause you to hold back the expression fo your emotions. This causes “emotional ashes” to pile up thwarting thoguths and actions from being spontaneous and strong. Difficult situations will cause queasiness, uncertainty and nervousness,  making actions haphazard and organized.

Key Principle: Center of compassion, love, group consciousness, and spiritually associated with “oneness” with “all that is.” Devotion, self-abandon.

Body Parts: Heart, upper back, thorax, lower area of the lungs, blood circulation, skin.

Glands: Thymus

Purpose: To acheive perfect union through love.  Through this center we are able to perceive the beauty of nature, the arts. poetry and music, and transform images, sounds and words into feelings. With the heart chakra with have the ability to transform and heal ourselves as well as others. An open heart chakra can have the ability of spontaneous healing or tranforming influence on others. Green is the color of healing, sympathy and harmony.

Harmonious Functioning: Energies of the heart can change the world around you. It can unite, reconcile, inspire, create joy and heal as well open the hearts of others. Compassion and the willingness to help comes naturally. Inner feelings are free of disturbances, conflicts, doubts and worries. You love for the sake of loving without expectation of gain in return. You put your heart into everything you do.

Disharmonious Functioning: Deep down you always expect recognition and reassurance for the love you give, and feel deeply disappointed if your efforts are not appreciated. You are not capable of accepting the love others want to give to you.

Insufficient Functioning: Makes you vulnerable to injury and dependent on the love and affection of others. You don’t take rejection well which forces you to withdraw and become depressed. You want to give your love but your fear of being rejected makes it difficult to find the right way of doing it. Sometimes you overcompensate by being overly freindly and helpful.

Fifth: The Throat Chakra:

Color: Pale blue

Element: Ether

Sense: Hearing

Symbol: 16-petalled lotus

Key Principle: Resonance of being.

Body Parts: Neck, throat, jaw, ears, throat, trachea, bronchial tubes, upper lungs, esophagus, arms.

Glands: Thyroid

Purpose: Center of communication, sound, and expression of creativity via thought, speech, and writing. Serves as a bridge between our thoughts and feelings, as well as our impulses and reactions.

Harmonious Functioning: When the throat chakra is completely open you are able to express your thoughts and feelings freely. You are aslo able to remain silent and listen to others with an open heart and understanding. Your speech is imaginative, colorful and clear. You are not swayed by other people’s opinions or manipulations, stay true to yourself and are able to say “no” if that is what you mean.

Disharmonious Functioning: Blocked throat chakra interferes with the communication between your mind and body. You will either find it difficult to reflect on your own feelings and as a result express your unresolved emotions in thoughtless actions. Or you will find yourself distracted by your own intellect and deny your emotions from being expressed. The only feeling you allow to be expressed are the ones you have allowed to pass through your filter of judgement. An unconsicous feeling of guilt and fears stop you from seeing and revealing your true self. Instead you overcompemsate  by hiding behind a mutlitude of fancy words and gestures. Your language is either coarse, unemotional or businesslike. You may even stutter. You don’t allow any vulnerabilities to be revealed and constantly try to appear strong at all costs – which place you under great pressure.

Disharmonious function of the throat chakra can also be found in people who abuse there expressive capabilities in order to draw attention to themselves or manipulate others.

Insufficient Functioning: Hinders your ability to express yourself. Normally you are shy, withdrawn and quiet. When you do try to express yourself, you get a lump in your throat, your voice sounds forced and you may even stutter. You feel afraid of peoples judgements about you and usually don’t trust you intuition.

Symbol: 96-petalled lotus.

Key Principle: This center is about Divine Thought, balanced intuition, and intellect and cosncious perception of  being.

Body Parts: Face, eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, cerebellum. central nervous system.

Glands: Pituitary

Purpose: The third eye chakra is the center of physic power, higher intuition, the energies of the spirit, magnetic forces, and light. Through the powers of our mind we are connected to the process of manifestion via the third eye chakra. Most of the thoughts in our lives are a result of unresolved emotional patterns which programmed by external influences.such as the opinions an prejudices of others as well as the manipulation of mainstream media.  Therefore our minds are often the servants of the emotionally loaded thoughts that sometimes control us. These dominant thoughts manifest into reality. By developing your consciousness and being in conscious control of your thoughts you will be more in control of the reality that you  wish to create.

Harmonious Functioning: Allows for a well-developed capacity for visualization,  intuitive comprehension and openess to mystic truths. Idealism and fantasy are key elements to your thinking and you realize that sometimes your thoughts and ideas become reality. The more the third eye chakra is developed the more your thoughts are based on an inner awareness of reality. Disharmonious Functioning: Being too much “in your head” where you life is ruled almost entirely by reason and intellect. Insufficient Functioning: If this chakra is blocked the only reality you will see is the external visible world. Life is dominated by material desires, physical needs and unresolved emotions.  You reject spiritual reflection and you think along the conventional lines of the mind-controlled mainstream society. With extreme blockages, thoughts become foggy and confused, and completely ruled by unresolved emotional patterns.

Purpose: Center of spirituality, enlightenment, dynamic thought, and energy. Seat of highest human perfection. The path to the unfolding of the seventh chakra is indicated by the color violet.Violet is the color of meditation and devotion. When the seventh chakra opens, and blockages remain in the lower chakras dissolve and their energies begin to resonate at the highest possible frequencies.

Harmonious Functioning: When your crown chakra begins to open you will experience more and more instances where there is littel or no division between inner and out reality. If this happens you will feel like you are waking up from a long dream. Then you will realize that you have awoken to your one and only true self and the light that you radiate opens the hearts of those receptive to the presence of the Divine. If you want to know something, you only have to direct your attention and creation is only game which takes place within your own infinite consciousness. At this level you come to realize that all you have been led to believe as real is nothing more than an illusion. You get to experience the greatest emptiness which is the source of all abundance for this is life in it’s purest essence – and this is Bliss.

Closed: If the crown chakra remains largely closed, you will feel separated from wholeness and abundance and not be free of fear. It is fear that largely suppresses the full function of our chakras,  preventing us from realizing our full potential. Unless you open yourself to spiritual truths during the years when the crown chakra can develope, you may experience feeling sof uncertainty and lack of purpose. Interpret these feelings as a call to look within yourself rather than escaping into excessive activity or other distractions, otherwise you may fall ill and be forced to keep still and rest.
